Cardiovascular Technician Training

Diploma | Pre-req. for Advanced Cardio Programs | Palm Harbor, FL

Cardiovascular Technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating heart (cardiac) and blood vessel (peripheral vascular) ailments or diseases. A Cardiovascular Technician, trained at Central Florida Institute may specialize in electrocardiograms (EKG's), Holter monitors, and stress testing. This program is a stepping-stone to the Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist program and the Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist program.

Cardiovascular Basic Studies students have the option to continue their studies in our Invasive Cardio Tech program or in our Non-Invasive Cardio Tech program

Program Description

The Cardiovascular Basic Studies training program in Palm Harbor, Florida is designed to provide students with the theory and clinical procedures necessary to serve as a member of a cardiology team with the ability to independently perform non-invasive procedures. Introduction to cath lab procedures will include sterile techniques, instrumentation setup, and patient pre-op and post-op recovery. The performance of echocardiography as required in hospitals, study of valvular, myocardial, and congenital pathologies is included.

The following areas are included in the Cardio Tech (CVT) training programs at CFI.

    • Event Monitors
    • Diagnostic Testing
    • Defibrillators
    • Pace Makers
    • Holter Monitor Set up and Scanning
    • Cardiac Rehab and Medications
    • Introduction to Noninvasive Vascular Studies
    • Stress Testing Techniques and Interpretative Skills
    • Introduction to Echocardiographic Imaging and Techniques

Students are required to complete *40.5 credit hours (approximately 34 weeks or 990 clock hours).

Certification

Cardiovascular Technician graduates may obtain the following national credentials by passing the corresponding certification examination:

Employment & Earnings

The Department of Labor lists the mean annual wages of cardiovascular technologists and technicians in 2010 were $54,550 in offices of physicians and $49,740 in general medical and surgical hospitals. They also point out that healthcare employers are particularly interested in certified Cardiovascular Technologists, so job prospects should be best for Cardiovascular Technologists with formal training such as that offered at Central Florida Institute.

According to the United States Department of Labor, Florida has the highest employment level for Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians in the country! The United States Department of Labor indicates that employment of cardiovascular technologists and technicians is expected to increase 24 percent through the year 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Graduates of the Cardio Tech program are employable in facilities such as:

Additional Program Information

Cardiovascular Technician or Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technician may perform electrocardiogram tests in order to monitor and record electrical impulses transmitted by the heart. These tests include basic EKG's, 12 lead placement, Holter Monitoring (portable EKG which records activity for 24-48 hours), and Stress Tests (treadmill).

The student is presented with the theory and clinical skills to perform:

    • EKG testing
    • Monitor viewing
    • Stress testing
    • Holter monitor setup and scanning
    • Cardiac pharmacology
