Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography

DIAGNOSTIC CARDIOVASCULAR SONOGRAPHY

Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonographers work in a noninvasive capacity to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating heart (cardiac) and blood vessel (peripheral vascular) ailments or diseases. At Central Florida Institute (CFI) training in electrocardiograms (EKGs), Holter monitors, and stress testing is a component of the Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography program.

The Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography (DCS) program is designed to prepare students to work as qualified cardiac sonographers in an allied health environment. The medical community refers to this procedure as an ECHO and it is an invaluable diagnostic tool used to evaluate and diagnose various types of heart disorders and diseases. Completion of the DCS Program will result in a challenging and rewarding career by fostering individual initiative, clinical judgment, critical thinking, and a commitment to ongoing professional development in the rapidly evolving field of echocardiography.

Upon graduation from Central Florida Institute Orlando students may be eligible to sit for several credentials. Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) offers the Certified Cardiographic Technician and the Certified Rhythm Analyst Technician (CRAT). The National Center for Competency Testing offers the National Certified ECG Technician. Graduates can also sit for the advanced credential of Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), and/or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). These credentials are encouraged and will enhance the opportunities to work in a variety of areas such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Outpatient Clinics
  • Mobile Imaging Companies
  • Physicians' offices
  • Cardiac Diagnostic Centers
  • Pediatric and/or Vascular service providers
  • Cardiology Practices
  • Diagnostic Imaging Centers

Job duties:

  • Providing clinical judgment of cardiac (heart) and peripheral vascular (blood vessel) ailments.
  • Perform procedures using ultrasound instrumentation to record vascular information, such as blood pressure, blood flow, oxygen saturation and peripheral volume changes.
  • Providing cardiac and vascular clinical imaging expertise of structures and relevant disease pathology.
  • Perform Echocardiography utilizing: M-Mode, 2-D, Color and Doppler to obtain diagnostic images and measurements.
  • Perform vascular ultrasound to determine the location of venous blood clots varicose veins & arterial disease severity & it’s location within the body.

The following areas are included in the Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography (DCS) training program at CFI.

  • EKG (Electro-cardiology) application and interpretation
  • Holter and Event Monitoring
  • ETT (Stress Test)
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Training
  • Pacemaker Implantation & Programmer Methodology
  • Introduction to Vascular/Pediatric Imaging Techniques
  • Adult Echocardiographic imaging & pathology implementation

The Department of Labor points out that healthcare employers prefer trained personnel; therefore, the job prospects should be best for Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonographers with formal training such as that offered at Central Florida Institute. Healthcare employers are particularly interested in Cardiovascular Sonographers with certification.
