The Medical Assistant occupation has challenging professional responsibilities, job security and advancement opportunities. CFI is committed to empowering MA students by providing hands-on medical assisting opportunities that demonstrate the in-demand skills and responsibilities of a Medical Assistant.
Students in the Medical Assistant program have the option to concentrate their studies in our Medical Assistant with X-Ray training or our Medical Assistant with Cardiovascular training.
Program Description
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the below job duties for the clinical medical assistant (may vary from state to state):
- Record vital signs & draw blood
- Assist physicians during examinations
- Collect, prepare, and test laboratory specimens
- Prepare patients for x-rays
- Take electrocardiograms
- Remove sutures & change dressings
- Arrange examining room instruments and equipment
- Purchase and maintain supplies and equipment
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
- Sterilize medical instruments & dispose of contaminated supplies
- Explain treatment procedures, medications and special diets to patients

Employment & Earnings
The Department of Labor lists the annual mean wages of Medical Assistants in 2010 were $30,110 in offices of physicians and $30,770 in general medical and surgical hospitals. The U.S. Department of Labor also projects that medical assistant employment is expected to grow 34 percent from 2008 to 2018. According to the United States Department of Labor, Florida has the third highest published employment level for Medical Assistants in the country!

Medical Assistants may obtain the following national and state credentials by passing the corresponding certification examination:
- (CMA) - Certified Medical Assistant through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- (RMA) - Registered Medical Assistant through American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- (NCMA) - Nationally Certified Medical Assistant through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- (NCPT) - Nationally Certified Phlebotomy Technician through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- (RPT) - Registered Phlebotomy Technician through American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- (NCET) - Nationally Certified ECG Technician through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- (BXMO) - Florida State Basic X-ray Machine Operator through Florida Department of Health
*This program prepares students for certification testing, although there is no guarantee of passing the certification test and passing the test is not a graduation requirement.
